Pet DNA Sample Instructions


Please follow the steps below to prepare and send your pet's personalized kit specimens.

Please check the communication you received first to see which of these tests are needed, this will be based on the treatment required.

Items Required

Please see each test below for details.

3 Coffee Filters

Natural, unbleached (brown) new coffee filters.

8 Q-tips

Unbleached preferred but not required.

2 Envelopes

New envelopes.

1 Ziploc Bag

A new Ziploc plastic bag.

Scissors

To obtain fur and whiskers. Use with caution!

1 Post-it

3x3 Inch clean piece or paper or sticky pad note.

FUR & WHISKER SAMPLE

Items Required

  1. Scissors.
  2. 2 New envelopes.
  3. 1 Post-it or 3x3" clean paper.
  4. 1 New Ziploc Bag.

Steps

  1. Wash hands. Clip two or three thumb sized samples of fur. The easiest location is from the dense, longer fur around the neck or base of the tail. Note the photo below to determine thumb sized amount.

    Note: Collecting hair from short-haired animals is more challenging. Brushing to include additional fur is acceptable. Be certain to include enough fur in the sample.

  2. Place the fur in a NEW, clean envelope. Fold the envelope and write your fur baby’s name on it.

  3. Carefully cut two whiskers from near your pet’s cheek. Label it “whiskers.” Pets lose whiskers all the time. They have so many of them for this very reason so that they always have plenty to give them the input that they need . So losing two whiskers does not affect them. The potential to help them by giving up the two whiskers is worth it.

  4. Write his or her name three times on the left side of a clean, 3x3 inch piece of paper as shown in attached photo. Sticky pad notes work well. Note: The size is important! DO NOT MIX the fur & whiskers.

  5. Place finished items in a manila envelope or a Priority Mail envelope to protect items. (The bulk of the ziplock bag can tear ordinary envelopes.)

  6. Send items FedEx or Priority Mail to expedite and guarantee delivery. Collect your postal tracking number.

OPTIONAL SAMPLES

A fur & whisker sample will be perfect in most cases, some treatments may require a blood and/or saliva sample.

A blood and saliva sample is optional, and only needed if specifically requested.

If either of these were requested for your pet, please see the instructions below.



Blood Sample

Items Required

  1. 3 natural, unbleached (brown) coffee filters.
  2. 2 New envelopes.
  3. 1 Post-it or 3x3" clean paper.

Steps

  1. Request a blood draw from your veterinarian. Tell vet that 2 Mls are required for allergy testing.
    The blood sample requires no changes. Blood in original form is all that is needed.
    No anticoagulant, separators, or spinning is required!

  2. Ask vet to put blood from the syringe directly onto layered coffee filters that are on a paper towel or printer paper to create a clean surface.

  3. Allow DNA sample to dry thoroughly. Important that it dries completely so sample cannot grow bacteria. In wet climates, placing sample in the sun on a car dash can dry it quickly to assure that the sample remains clean. Blood should dry within 10-60 minutes. Monitor and when dry, secure sample in a clean envelope to avoid contamination from dust or spills. Fold all the filters together.

  4. Write your fur baby’s name three times on the left side of a clean, 3x3 inch piece of paper as shown in attached photo. Sticky pad notes work well. Note: The size is important!

  5. Place name paper and envelope with DNA sample into a waterproof envelope so sample will stay dry and not be damaged in the mail.

  6. Send sample FED EX or Priority Mail only. Collect and keep tracking number.

Saliva Sample

Items Required

  1. 8 x Q-tips OR 1 natural, unbleached (brown) coffee filter (see point 5 below)
  2. 2 New envelopes.
  3. 1 Post-it or 3x3" clean paper.
  4. 1 New Ziploc Bag.

Steps

  1. Wash hands. Wipe eight Q-tips on the inside of your fur baby’s cheek. You can swipe four Q-tips at a time. Aim the Q-tips towards the bottom jowl where saliva collects in the mouth. Be certain to moisten the cotton with their saliva. Cut off the end of the Q-tip that has NO saliva.

    Note: Non-bleached Q-tips are required. They can be found at most Natural Grocer type stores… Sprouts, Whole Foods. Occasionally, organic Q-tips can be found at ordinary grocery stores. They are readily available on Amazon as well.

  2. Allow Q-tips to dry thoroughly. It is very important that they dry completely.

  3. Place the Q-tips in a NEW, clean envelope. Fold the envelope and write your fur baby’s name on it.

  4. Write their name three times on the left side of a clean, 3x3 inch piece of paper as shown in photo below. Sticky pad notes work well. Note: The size is important!

  5. If you want to use a coffee filter instead, please saliva sample on it instead, and circle on the filter where the sample is located.

  6. Place all items inside a new, clean ziplock bag. Do NOT seal the ziplock bag.

  7. Carefully cut two whiskers from near your pet’s cheek. Label it “whiskers.”

  8. Place ziplock bags with finished items in a manila envelope or a Priority Mail envelope to protect items. (The bulk of the ziplock bags will tear ordinary envelopes.)

  9. Send items FedEx or Priority Mail to expedite and guarantee delivery. Collect your postal tracking number.
